Australian Silver Kangaroo

Issued by the Royal Australian Mint, the Australian Silver Kangaroo coins have been in production since 1993 and revered by investors and collectors for just as long.  Unlike many other nations’ silver bullion coins, the Australian Silver Kangaroo actually contain slightly more than one troy ounce of silver per coin.

Like the Chinese Silver Panda coins, the Australian Silver Kangaroo immortalizes its nation’s most famous animal in pure silver. And, like its Chinese counterpart, it has a new reverse design each year.  This is done to attract both investors and collectors to the series. In the 2006 coin showed here, the designer illustrates a bouncing kangaroo with a curious Joey peering out of its mother’s pouch.

Like the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf, the obverse displays an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

The popularity of the Australian Silver Kangaroo series is only one of several animal-inspired coin collections offered by the Royal Australian Mint.  The Australian Silver Koala was first released in 2007 and has a face value of $1 AUS. The Australian Kookaburra series first debuted in 1990, and comes in a variety of denominations from $0.50 - $30 AUS, all depending on silver weight. The Australian Lunar Series, commemorating the Chinese Lunar calendar for the 12-year cycle from 1996-2007, was originally offered in gold. In 1999, the Mint introduced silver coins, each depicting a different animal based on the corresponding Chinese year.
